BMWs offer the best in driving performance. They are designed to be pleasing to the eye and they are loads of fun to drive. However, if you have had the unfortunate luck of having an accident in your BMW, there is a chance that your car won’t start following a collision. This is a common issue caused by the BMW battery safety terminal sensor, also known as the BST sensor. Let’s take a look at this sensor and what to do when it fails.
The battery safety terminal (BST) sensor is a safety feature that was put into place to reduce the risk of a short circuit in the event of an accident. The BST sensor is part of the battery positive clamp that is attached to the battery post. If you are involved in an accident, this safety device is designed to disconnect the battery for your safety and that of your BMW. The BST design is a good idea, since it can reduce the chance of an engine fire and save lives. However, the slightest impact, such as hitting a curb, could cause the sensor to disconnect the battery unnecessarily.
Symptoms include:
If you were in an accident and are unable to start your BMW, check your battery cables to make sure that they are not loose. If the BST sensor was triggered, it would have disconnected the positive cable to your battery.
If your battery safety terminal sensor was triggered, you need to have it replaced. Many people have taken it upon themselves to bypass the sensor by adding a resistor. We do not recommend this for several reasons. By doing so, you are removing an important safety feature that has been put in place to keep you and your passengers safe and to prevent further damage to your BMW. If the BST sensor is bypassed and you are in an accident, the battery will not disconnect. This raises your chance of having a car fire due to a battery short which can put everyone near your car in jeopardy.
BST sensors are inexpensive, and changing them doesn’t take long. Our factory-trained BMW Level 1 Master Certified Technicians can take care of your sensor issue quickly and safely. Do not take your BMW to a mechanic that is going to bypass the system. Stay safe and have it done correctly.
We can get you in and out of our shop much quicker than a dealership, and we can beat their prices every time. Dealerships tend to make you feel as though any work that is done on your car has to be performed by their employees. This is not the case. By law, you can have your work performed by a qualified mechanic using appropriate parts, and the dealership must continue to honor its new-car warranty.
