BMW “i” Brand Being Shown off in New York

James Schembari for The New York Times

The New York BMW Display is showing off two model concepts this week. The i8 Concept Roadster and the smaller i3 all electric city car. The i8 can do 60mph in just 4.5 seconds! Although it’s lacking electric only driving at just 20 miles on solely electric power, it has a total range of over 300 miles in hybrid driving mode. The i3 on the other hand has an 80-100 mile range.

New methods of production will vastly reduce the amount of energy and water used. The ‘i” car line also involves BMW’s venture capital arm, which is investing in several “soft infrastructure” improvements. One is a mobile app called MyCityWay, which offers an extensive set of city guides; another is a car-sharing system, in San Francisco, called DriveNow. On Tuesday, the company announced an investment in Embark, a software firm that creates guides to mass transit systems. BMW executives said that such investments reflected the company’s support of multimodal transportation systems, instead of systems that rely only on the automobile.
